Alice Lorraine Skalland was born on April 4, 1924, at Garretson to Isaac and Nana (Olson) Skalland.  After growing up on a farm near Garretson, she graduated from Garretson High School in 1941.  She attended Augustana College for a year before transferring to the Sioux Valley School of Nursing and becoming a registered nurse in 1945.

On Dec. 16, 1945, she was united in marriage to Lester K. Brue at Split Rock Lutheran Church, rural Brandon. They lived on the family farm between Parker and Hurley, employed part-time for many years as an RN at the Freeman Community Hospital.  In 1987 they retired and moved to Sioux Falls, enjoying spending time as snowbirds in Arizona.  She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Hurley and First Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls.

Grateful for having shared her life are three daughters, Peggy (Brent) Brown, Estes Park, Colo.; Corrine (Greg White) Brue, Austin, Texas and Jan (Glen) Enright, Madison; a son-in-law Bill Aeschlimann, Vermillion; nine grandchildren, Kristin, Eric, Chad, Brian, Craig, Jessica, Joel, Daniel and Hannah; and five great-grandchildren, Sydney, Tyler, Isabel, Dash and Tanner.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lester in 2010, daughter Karol, granddaughter-in-law, Laura and three brothers, Norman, Irron and Roger.
