When Earl joined the Army, Kay followed and went to work as an electrical assistant on ships being built in the shipyards. When he received papers to go to Germany, they went to Las Vegas, Nev., and married on Sept. 27, 1944, and Kay returned to South Dakota.

After Earl returned from the war, they settled on a farm north of Monroe, also living in Monroe, Marion and Sioux Falls, moving back to Marion in 1987. Earl and Kay raised three children: Dianne, Gary and Richard.
